Neighborhood Spotlight: Trove in Watkinsville

Our commitment to designing and crafting homes that stand apart for their functionality and distinctiveness is further reflected in the communities Green River Builders creates. Nowhere is that more apparent than at Trove in Watkinsville. Architectural choices inside this enclave of 57 homes were made to celebrate the Southern grace that is synonymous with this historic city situated on the outskirts of Athens. Those choices combine to create inviting streetscapes that surround a central mews, where rocking chair front porches pay homage to a simpler time while holding the promise of countless visits with the neighbors.

Housing and Available Lots at Trove

With only 57 opportunities to call Trove “home,” we’re proud to announce that community homes are now available for sale. While construction on several production homes and contracted Watkinsville lots is underway, there are still plenty of alluring home sites from which to choose. Each home site features a corresponding floor plan from four available “cottage” plans. All plans boast four bedrooms and a collection of indoor and outdoor living spaces that promote togetherness. Open concepts combined with the intentional placement of an abundance of windows enhance the sense of spaciousness.

A major benefit to selecting your home site and plan is the chance to designate paint colors, finishes, and fixtures to create a design aesthetic that is in step with the latest trends and your unique tastes. You’ll have an opportunity to work with our designer to make those selections, then watch your new Green River Home take shape – from start to glorious finish.

Shopping and Leisure

Located just 1.3 miles from Downtown Watkinsville and 10 miles from Downtown Athens, opportunities for residents from this Oconee County community to shop are abundant. The area surrounding Trove offers everything from the convenience of local grocery stores and big box chains to the undeniable draw of charming boutiques and antique shops. Epps Bridge Centre showcases such recognizable brands as American Eagle, Banana Republic, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Old Navy, PetSmart, and more. Nearby Costco and Sam’s Club prove popular stops, while independently owned shops like Cheeky Peach, Indie South, and Epiphany are hidden gems.

For adventures of a different sort, Oconee and neighboring Clarke County are brimming with golf courses and scenic parks. You could opt to hit the links at the University of Georgia Golf Course one day and explore the trails at Harris Shoals Park the next. On rainy days, several movie theatres, an on-trend axe-throwing house, and a retro bowling alley prove great destinations. Given Trove’s proximity to Athens, the local music scene is brimming with up-and-coming talent mixed with the occasional return of established bands. For even more entertainment, Athens’ Classic Center plays host to everything from ballets to musicals.

Historic Sites

Once set at the western edge of the emerging American frontier, legend holds that Watkinsville was originally named Big Springs. It adopted its current name in 1802, inspired by Colonel Robert Watkins, an Augusta lawyer and early compiler of “A Digest of the Laws of the State of Georgia.” Its oldest existing structure is the Eagle Tavern, which dates back to 1801 and now serves as a museum. Other popular historic sites near Trove include the circa 1897 Elder’s Mill Covered Bridge – which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the circa 1913 Central School House at the edge of Heritage Park, and – as one of the oldest public universities in the United States, the University of Georgia campus is filled with history.

Fun Fact:  Did you know Watkinsville was once the County Seat of Clarke County before Athens took its place? Spurned city residents opted to create their own county – named after the Oconee River – and Watkinsville became its county seat in 1875.

Restaurants

Needless to say, given its location in the South, comfort food is king in the area surrounding Trove. Watkinsville is home to a wide variety of cuisines and great restaurants, with even more dining destinations within a short drive in the neighboring foodie haven of Athens. Be sure to add Watkinsville’s Chops & Hops to your list of stops, as well as Girasoles, Blind Pig Tavern, Fully Loaded Pizza, White Tiger Gourmet, and Doughby’s – among others. Athens boasts a wealth of recognizable chain restaurants, like Texas Roadhouse, Cracker Barrel, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Flying Biscuit, and Mellow Mushroom, just to name a few. Of course, independent eateries like Mama’s Boy, The National, Last Resort Grill, Seabear Oyster Bar, and MANY more are really where it’s at on the culinary scale. For after-dinner drinks, Athens is filled to overflowing with excellent bars and breweries.
